Goodbye, Cameron!

After 25 days in Camerons Bight, the Elephant Seal has finished moulting and departed the foreshore to head South!

The Whitecliffs Foreshore Reserve staff and Committee wish to thank the community for their understanding and cooperation in the closing of the carpark and the beach and look forward to reopening these areas to the public today (albeit a bit smelly).

To ensure the ongoing protection and monitoring of the seal over the last 3 and a half weeks, Whitecliffs Foreshore Reserve received interagency support from Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Forestry and Wildlife Officers from the Conservation Regulator, DEECA Greater Melbourne and the Marine Response Unit (MRU) from Zoos Victoria.

This collaboration ensured a peaceful existence for the seal during his stay while also enabling the opportunity for community education with thousands of onlookers of all ages. This included many questions about Elephant Seals and broader conservations around Port Phillip Bay,

Australian Fur Seals and the human role and responsibility in the conservation of wildlife.

If you see any Seals or any other Marine Birds/Mammals in distress on our coastlines, call the MRU on 1300 245 678.
